Totally Fun | Drone Photography

Aerial Drone

Operating the camera on the drone was a very cool experience.

Totally Fun | Drone Photography

I recently got the chance to learn how to operate and film with the camera on an aerial drone. I went out on a shoot that was on a closed set and had way more fun than I even imaged I’d have. Getting to compose shots from a camera gimbal on a drone offers a totally different perspective, and opens the flood gates on the possibilities of composition. Not only did I have to think about panning and tilting the camera, but the elevation, speed, and angle of the drone all came into play when composing a cool looking moving video shot. I worked hand-in-hand with the drone operator when composing shots, and often found that it was a team effort when it came to “getting the shot”. I can not wait to do more of this.

ALWAYS LEARNING

I think that no matter what you do in life, you never know it all and it’s important to continue to learn and progress. I stumbled across this really cool short video on composition tips/rules to remember. I learned these in Photo 101 at Brooks Institute of Photography when I first started my photography career, but a littler refresher on them never hurt.

Inspiration

INSPIRATION

Being a good photographer means much more than just pressing the camera shutter button and getting an image. It takes planning, skill, and inspiration. I’ve always needed inspiration to continue moving forward and continue being creative with the types of images that I produce. There’s a saying that I’ve always liked, but I can’t remember who said it… “Good artists copy, but great artists steal.” To mean, it doesn’t necessarily mean actual stealing, it just means that someone’s idea inspires you to build off of it and make it your own.

I recently saw a set of images on an inspirations web site, leading me to already start thinking about how I want to accomplish similar shots with my wife who is a professional dancer. Stay tuned…

Hollywood

Hollywood

I’ll be the first to admit it—I’m a closet movie nerd. I love watching movies and have a pretty hefty collection of films saved not only in DVD form, but in my XBOX movie library. And when I recently got the chance to walk around the back lot of Warner Brothers in Hollywood for a top-secret Read Meta Magazine shoot, it took all I had to hold back a huge shit-eating grin. I felt a lot like I would image a fat kid might feel as he watches freshly glazed Krispy Kremes pass by on the wire conveyor belt. I wasn’t able to shoot much more than what you see here, which I poached with my camera phone, but suffice to say, there was a lot going on—grips and camera operators running around with carts full of equipment, sets being built, and actors picking up their wardrobe. I only spent a short amount of time there , but it was definitely a cool experience getting a chance to peek behind the curtain.

Everywhere you looked, there was a lot going on.

7 Million Dollars

7 Million Dollars

Yes, you read that right. And yes, that photo is correct. If you know Porsches, then you already know that this car is extremely rare, but when I attended the Luftgekühlt Porsche Show at Bandito Brothers, I had no idea that the car I snapped photos of was worth that much. I’m more of a two wheel aficionado, but I can certainly appreciate a rad car when I see one. Hopefully I get to shoot more cars in the future. To see more photos and check out a video I shot that day, visit Thefasthouse.com or click here.
