X Games Flier

While it probably isn’t the best photo, it’s still cool to see a photo of mine turned into a piece of this X Games flier. The shot was from a recent shoot I did with Brian Deegan. X Games is going to be fun this year. For the second year in a row, I’ll be working behind the scenes at the Freestyle events.

Massive Swell Hits

Massive Swell Hits

If you live in Southern California, then you probably are aware of the huge swell that has hit in the past few days. A storm in New Zealand is responsible, and I decided to head down to The Wedge in Newport Beach to check out the waves and take some pictures for the Fasthouse website. In all my years of living in SoCal, I have never been to The Wedge on a day when it’s firing. It was insane to watch the sets roll in, pound up against the jetty, and then suddenly peak up before closing out on the shore. On this day, the waves were said to measure 15-18 feet and there were a handful of body surfers, body boarders, and surfers braving the conditions. One surfer in particular was on a Stand Up Paddle board and he caught some massive waves before one ultimately broke the front of his board off.

In the short amount of time I spent at The Wedge, I had a lot of fun shooting surfing, and I’ve already begun looking into a water housing for this summer when surfing really takes off. Having grown up at or near the beach, I’ve spent a lot of time in the water and would love to start documenting surfing on a regular basis.

This wave is the one that broke this guy's surfboard. It was worth the fun though.

Latest Fasthouse Video

Fast 1 – Two Stroke Championships from Fasthouse on Vimeo.

One of my first clients here at LDM was Fasthouse, and I continue to do regular work for them. A rapidly growing brand in not only motocross, but anything fast, Fasthouse speaks to the lifestyle of Southern California and taps into the deep roots of Hollywood stunts, film, and basic coolness. The most recent video that I did for them was one on Sean Collier’s day at the Two-Stroke Championships at Glen Helen. And thanks to numerous factors, it was a blast to put together.

The day as a whole was filled with ups and downs, and collaborating with friend Toastacia “Toast” Boyd, we were able to cover every facet of what happened. Aboard a super powerful KX500, Collier was easily the fastest all day, but a major mechanical failure in the first moto caused him to DNF. After scrambling to piece the bike back together, Sean managed to overcome a bad start in the second moto to take the win. But the fact that the action and story line was so good wasn’t the only thing that made the day so fun. Toast shoots exclusively on Super 8 film, and her footage provided a very unique flare to the finished film. I really look forward to working with her on more projects down the road. In the meantime, check out the finished film, and leave a comment about what you think.

Cover Shot

I snagged the latest cover shot right before leaving TWMX.

I snagged the latest cover shot right before leaving TWMX.

Cover Shot

Just a couple weeks before I left TransWorld Motocross, I participated in my final cover shoot for the magazine with Eli Tomac. I haven’t counted, but this cover is probably nearing the 30th cover that I’ve landed over the course of my career at the magazine. The shoot was out at the private Honda Supercross track, and as I expected, Tomac was super easy to work with, putting up with me asking him to hit the difficult SX whoops numerous times. To get this shot, I used a giant reflector for fill, and I’m very pleased with the results. I’ve come to really like the way that reflectors make an image look and I hope to use them on more projects in the future. The only downfall is how difficult it is to set up the reflector, especially if it’s windy like it was on this day. I hope to post all of my cover images on this site in the next couple months. Check back soon.

Totally Fun | Drone Photography

Aerial Drone

Operating the camera on the drone was a very cool experience.

Totally Fun | Drone Photography

I recently got the chance to learn how to operate and film with the camera on an aerial drone. I went out on a shoot that was on a closed set and had way more fun than I even imaged I’d have. Getting to compose shots from a camera gimbal on a drone offers a totally different perspective, and opens the flood gates on the possibilities of composition. Not only did I have to think about panning and tilting the camera, but the elevation, speed, and angle of the drone all came into play when composing a cool looking moving video shot. I worked hand-in-hand with the drone operator when composing shots, and often found that it was a team effort when it came to “getting the shot”. I can not wait to do more of this.
